Overview
A small-capacity 3.7V LiPo battery (≤500mAh) is chosen when the battery cavity is extremely constrained and every millimetre of thickness, width and length matters. In this range geometry usually decides the design before capacity does: the same rating is available in very different footprints, so start from the tightest enclosure axis and the usable finished-pack space, then confirm runtime, load, connector and PCM. Compact wearables, miniature sensing electronics, smart accessories and small connected devices all use this class, but the model is selected by fit and load — not by device type.
How to Choose a LiPo Battery at 500mAh and Below
At 500mAh and below, the selection order is different from larger cells:
- Thickness often matters before capacity — in a thin or curved enclosure the achievable thickness caps which cells are even possible, so fix that axis first.
- The same capacity uses very different footprints — a 500mAh cell can be thin-and-wide, narrow-and-long or short-and-thick; pick the shape that matches your cavity, not just the number.
- Finished-pack size matters more than bare-cell size alone — PCM, wire exit, connector, insulation and assembly tolerance all add to the bare cell, so design the cavity around the assembled pack.
For a tightly constrained or unusually shaped cavity, a custom-shaped pouch cell can be developed around the available space.
