3.7V 500mAh LiPo Batteries — Compare Sizes for Your Device

Fit 500mAh into a compact battery cavity while balancing finished-pack size, runtime and pulse-load requirements.

A 500mAh LiPo battery sits at a practical crossover between ultra-compact cells and larger portable packs. For GPS trackers, LoRa sensor nodes, wireless audio devices and similar small electronics, 500mAh provides enough energy for periodic radio events while keeping the finished pack small enough for a compact enclosure. Compare verified model dimensions, estimate the finished assembly envelope, and shortlist geometries that leave practical clearance.

Technical Overview

A 500mAh LiPo battery suits small devices that need more runtime than an ultra-compact cell without moving to a larger pack. At 500mAh, geometry can matter as much as nominal capacity: the same 500mAh rating can be achieved in very different thickness, width and length combinations. In devices such as compact GPS trackers or LoRa sensor nodes, most operating time is spent at low standby current, but GNSS acquisition, cellular uplink or radio bursts create short peaks the cell and protection circuit must handle. Select by the finished-pack envelope and actual load profile, not by capacity alone.

Fit a 500mAh Cell into a Small Battery Cavity

The same 500mAh rating can occupy very different shapes. For example, the listed THOR-303450 has a nominal 3 × 34 × 50mm bare-cell envelope, while the listed THOR-701555 uses a narrower 7 × 15 × 55mm format. These examples illustrate geometry choices; they do not confirm finished-pack fit.

At this capacity, a few millimeters of thickness, width or wire-exit space can decide whether the battery can be assembled without forcing the enclosure.

Same 500mAh capacity, very different geometry. The listed models below all store 500mAh, yet each one asks for completely different space inside a device:

1

THOR-303450

3.0 × 34 × 50 mm — the thinnest listed 500mAh cell. Thin and wide; suits a shallow cavity that has surface area to spare.

2

THOR-701555

7.0 × 15 × 55 mm — thick but only 15 mm wide. Suits a narrow, long channel where width is the hard limit.

3

THOR-802528

8.0 × 25 × 28 mm — the shortest listed 500mAh cell at 28 mm long. Trades thickness for the smallest footprint.

If thickness is the fixed constraint, compare the thin-and-wide models first; if width or length is the limit, a thicker geometry can be acceptable to shrink the footprint. All three store 500mAh — the geometry, not the capacity, decides which one fits.

If the 500mAh envelope is still too large, compare a nearby lower-capacity geometry or ask whether a custom shape is practical for the project volume.

Validate 500mAh Current Capability for Compact Portable Loads

The 500mAh rating describes stored energy, not maximum continuous or peak current. In a compact GPS tracker, standby current may be under 1mA, but a GNSS cold-start or LTE-M/NB-IoT uplink can demand a pulse lasting seconds at a much higher draw. Similarly, a LoRa node transmits short radio bursts that create brief current spikes above the average. Whether the cell can sustain these peaks without excessive voltage sag depends on the specific cell model, internal resistance, C-rate, PCM trip threshold and operating temperature. Use the battery runtime and capacity guide for energy planning, then validate loaded voltage and pulse duration with the actual device electronics. A custom LiPo battery configuration should be reviewed when the standard assembly does not satisfy these constraints.

Bare Cell Size vs Finished Battery Size

A bare 500mAh pouch cell is only the electrochemical core. The finished battery may also include protection, insulation, leads and a connector, so device CAD should reserve more than the bare-cell dimensions shown in a model name.

In a compact tracker or wireless sensor node, finished thickness and connector direction must be checked alongside antenna clearance, PCB placement and any sealed or potted enclosure features, because even 1–2mm of additional finished-pack height can interfere with GNSS or cellular antenna placement.

How to Choose a 500mAh LiPo Battery

1

Measure the Space

Record the maximum battery cavity: thickness × width × length.

2

Allow Clearance

Allow for manufacturing tolerance, insulation, assembly and long-term cell expansion.

3

Confirm the Load

Provide continuous and peak current requirements. Capacity alone does not define current capability.

4

Define the Assembly

Confirm PCM, connector, polarity, wire length, wire exit direction and labeling.

5

Verify With Samples

Confirm the final drawing, finished dimensions and sample fit before volume production.

For tracker and IoT devices, also verify antenna clearance and sealed-enclosure compatibility with the finished pack. Read the LiPo Battery Size and Device Fit Guide →

    500mAh LiPo Battery FAQ

What size is a 500mAh LiPo battery?

There is no single standard size for a 500mAh LiPo battery. The listed models use different thickness, width and length combinations, so compare the actual envelope rather than selecting by capacity alone.

Is bare-cell size the same as finished battery size?

No. Bare-cell dimensions exclude some or all protection, insulation, leads and connector space. Final dimensions depend on the selected assembly and must be confirmed on the finished drawing.

What current can a 500mAh battery deliver?

Do not determine allowable current from 500mAh capacity alone. Continuous current, peak current, pulse duration and cutoff requirements must be confirmed against the exact cell model, internal resistance, PCM specification and operating temperature.

Can a 500mAh LiPo battery be made thinner?

A different 500mAh pouch-cell geometry may reduce thickness by increasing width or length. If none of the listed shapes works, engineering can review a custom option, but the requested size and capacity must be validated together with the device load profile.

    Should I choose 350mAh or 600mAh instead of 500mAh?

A 350mAh cell can offer a thinner or shorter envelope when runtime is secondary to mechanical fit. A 600mAh cell may extend runtime if the enclosure has enough depth or footprint. Compare finished-pack dimensions side by side, because the capacity difference alone does not predict which geometry fits better.

Is a 500mAh LiPo suitable for a compact GPS tracker?

It can be considered when the finished-pack envelope fits the tracker enclosure and the selected cell supports the measured standby current plus GNSS acquisition and cellular or BLE uplink peaks. Confirm PCM trip threshold, loaded voltage sag during radio events, connector routing alongside the antenna, operating temperature range and any project-specific certification with the actual tracker electronics.

What should I check when using a 500mAh cell in a LoRa or IoT sensor node?

Verify that the cell and PCM can handle the short transmit-current pulses without excessive voltage drop. For long-deployed IoT nodes, also review standby drain from the PCM quiescent current, self-discharge over months, and whether the charging strategy and temperature range match the installation environment.

Why compare nearby capacities: A 350mAh pack trades runtime for a thinner or shorter finished envelope, which can matter when a tracker or sensor node is constrained by case depth. A 600mAh pack adds runtime for a tracker or sensor node that has slightly more enclosure space, while an 800mAh pack suits small wearable, portable-medical or compact instrument devices that need longer runtime at a moderate, steady load rather than a smaller tracking envelope.
